Nobody knows why we sleep, but we all do it. Some people think that everyone is just trying to be cool, but scientists figure there has to be a better reason.
A lot of people think that sleeping allows us to recharge our bodies and mend worn tissues. Stephen Jay Gould or someone else who was smart wrote that animals slept as a natural way to conserve the environment. If creatures were to spend the entire twenty-four hour period awake, alert and at full power. They would be non-stop eating machines, rapidly destroying their environment and its resources faster than it could be replenished. Sleep allows time for the ecosystem to repair. It also allows a second, nocturnal ecosystem to survive.
Scientists believe that sleep helps humans consolidate and stabilize the memory. R.E.M. sleep also helps keep us sane. When I sleep, I like to think that I am practicing for my eventual death. That way, I won't be rusty for when I need it.
Whatever sleep is for, it sure is boring.
