Pin a pink ribbon on Thomas Jefferson
Not only was Thomas Jefferson the third president of the United States, he is also remembered as the principal author of the Declaration of Independence, an influential Founding Father, and a lover of fish ponds (this last part is a testament to the delightfulness of Wikipedia).
Today, his namesake hospital, Thomas Jefferson University's Kimmel Cancer Center in Pennsylvania is leading the way in the fight against breast cancer.
Dr. Anne Rosenberg, dedicated breast surgeon, has recently told ABC news about the exciting developments at the Center where she has specialized in breast cancer for the past 20 years:
ABC News:
The diagnostic advances have seen much more use of ultrasound, MRI, and a new technique called breast specific gamma imaging.
This is a test that's new in this area, new all over the country and we're enrolling patients in different studies related to that as well as MRI studies to look at the role of MRI in treating breast disease. These are active studies both locally and on a national basis.
With relationship to treatment of breast cancer there have been incredible advances not only with the surgery but also with radiation therapy and medical oncology.
With radiation therapy here at Jefferson, we do participate in different trials related to partial breast radiation, focused breast radiation -- which would hopefully limit any injury to the rest of the breast tissue.
The Kimmel Center also participates in national trials in breast cancer treatments including different drugs and chemoprevention. This is an opportunity for women to speak with oncologists specializing in breast cancer about the possibility of participating in clinical trials that test these new treatments.
Hopefully with enough success, these trials will one day lead to a world that is free of breast cancer.
Now there's something more useful than a two dollar bill.
