The ICU may be saving lives, but it's also keeping patients from resting in peace. According to Dr. Randall Friese, Intensive Care Units are becoming Intensive! Too Intensive! Care Units. The assistant professor of burn/trauma/critical care attests that patients subjected to critical care protocols are having their sleep patterns severely disrupted. Unable to reach restorative stages of sleep, patients are being robbed of an important component of the healing process:
"We haven't recognized the importance of prescribing sleep. Patients in the ICU may look like they are sleeping, but they're not sleeping well. They are not getting the restorative stages that are required," Friese said. (HealthDay)
So if you have any plans of falling out of a tree or joining a street gang, might I recommend adding Bed, Bath, and Beyond's Pampering Travel Sleep Set to your daredevil paraphernalia.
