That's you, isn't it? If you're not sure, check if you've been in a successful blockbuster franchise with the word Bourne in the title. No? Not you? Is your best friend's name Ben Affleck? Have you kicked your smoking habit via hypnosis?
If you've answered "no" to all of these questions, you are not alone. Only one of us can be THE Matt Damon, not too many of us are best friends with Ben Affleck, and quitting smoking via hypnosis isn't the answer for all of us.
Which brings me to this: The nicotine vaccine that's recently made headlines.
The vaccine is in the process of midstage testing and is showing some signs of effectiveness. According to Dr. Stephen I. Rennard, lead researcher, "the quit rates are comparable to what's seen in other studies for things that are considered to work."
How does it work?
The treatment keeps nicotine from reaching the brain, taking the fun out of smoking and hopefully making it easier to give up. Some nicotine still gets in, possibly easing withdrawal, the main reason quitters relapse. (LA Times)
If you're tired of being a slave to fun - the nicotine kind - and want to have more things in common with Matt Damon, or just want to improve your health and not smell like an ashtray, its good that you took the time to read this post and are having moments of self-reflection. I support you.
Dr. Stephen I. Rennard's clinical interests include chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, clinical therapeutic trials, and cellular mechanisms of disease; smoking cessation; airway cell biology, epithelial cell inflammatory cell interactions, airway repair, and mechanisms of peribronchiolar fibrosis; and bronchoalveolar lavage. He practices in Omaha, Nebraska.
