It seems that older women who snack on chocolate around the clockolate have weaker bones than women who eke out meager, chocolateless existences. The daily-chocolate eaters had a 3% lower bone density. Their tibias were weaksauce; their heels were a pile, and their shins went all Ally McBeal.
To make sure their study was in accordance with Fair Dinkum, The Australian researchers took steps to rule out other dietary possibilities. They did find that chocolate-eatin' ladies were skinnier on whole, wealthier and tended to eat healthier overall.
Chocolate may be good for the heart and it contains small amounts of phenyl-ethylamine which matches the same chemicals that we release when we are in love. Chocolate also has flavonoids which are good for the bones, but are also full of oxalates which stops the bones from absorbing calcium. So eat the stuff at your own risk.
Yet, if this study bears weight, something that these skinny-legged women may not be able to do if they keep eating chocolate, doctors may have a way to prevent some cases of osteoporosis.
